With this week being Global Awareness Week, I got in contact with Cameron Von St. James to share as much information as I could with my earnest followers about asbestos exposure and mesothelioma cancer.  He shared the moving story about his wife Heather, who has been a 10 year survivor of mesothelioma after receiving a diagnosis and a 15 month life expectancy if she received no treatment.  I was so moved by her experience, I earnestly felt that her story and awareness to the risk of asbestos exposure needed to be shared.

“Without treatment, I wouldn’t live past 15 months. In November of 2005 my doctor said I had malignant pleural mesothelioma. He said “cancer”, but all I heard was that I might not be able to raise my three month old daughter, and my husband might become a widower after just six and a half years of marriage. I learned that my father, a man who worked in drywall construction, had unknowingly exposed his own little girl to asbestos through his work jacket. Treatment options were limited and there was no guarantee. Today, I’ve outlived my original prognosis and continue to raise awareness of this terrible disease.” – Heather Von St. James, Beating The Odds


According to Mesothelioma.com’s blog post 5 Ways to Show Support During Asbestos Awareness Week ,  exposure to asbestos was generally thought to be a risk only to workers on sites where asbestos was once used or is currently being used. However, secondhand exposure can occur to loved ones when workers come into contact with asbestos, they carry the fibers home on their clothing. Veterans, teachers who work in older school buildings, workers who renovate older homes, firefighters, people that live in areas with naturally occurring asbestos and many others are also at risk for exposure to asbestos.  Mesothelioma is primarily caused by asbestos exposure and there are many misconceptions today that we are no longer being exposed to asbestos, however reports are finding that we are.  With numerous older built schools still containing asbestos fibers, children and teachers are those among the most at risk of asbestos exposure.  Read more: http://www.healthychild.org/five-myths-about-asbestos-in-schools/

The product looked really nice and the pamphlets that came with the system were quite informative. That being said, there are a lot of chemical ingredients that I was not comfortable putting on my skin everyday. I was grateful for the opportunity to try a brand new formula, however I do not feel the need to lighten my skin nor was I wanting all of those chemicals on my skin. I often turn to the trusted site, ewg.org to look up the ingredients of cosmetics to see what I am putting on my skin and essentially into my bloodstream. One of the worst ingredients listed in this skin care regimen was Hydroquinone which is a known toxin in relation to cancer, allergen and a reproductive toxin. There are also many synthetic ingredients listed such as artificial coloring and perfumes/fragrances. All of which are toxic to organs, reproductive systems and have be linked to cancers. 

Although I am extremely thankful to have been chosen as a product influencer, I must say that I am quite dissapointed in the ingredients used in this regimen. Ladies, spots on your faces or uneven skin tone is as beautiful as you feel and if you can love what you see in the mirror, you can save yourself from major chemical exposure when using products like this one to “fix or repair.”  The only way to truly “love the skin we are in” is to see our differences as beauty no matter the color or tone. Please consider the toxins that the cosmetic companies expose us to, KNOWINGLY expose us to on a daily basis. They are selling us “beauty” at the cost of our health. Be informed, be healthy and be safe.

A while back, earnest dad and I had chatted a bit about using unpaper towels. Never really getting around to it and feeling quite intimidated by the change, I finally bit the bullet and reached out to the sweet Sarah over at Marley’s Monsters to get our hot hands on some high quality unpaper towels.  There were some great fabrics to choose from, since I figured paper towels are used to clean up messes it was best to get a fabric or two that looked nice together and hid stains if needed. I loved the flower print and Sarah helped me to pick the perfect complementary color to go with it.  We are a family of four and we ordered 24 unpaper towels, we have not been disappointed at all!

Here they are compared to the Honest Company’s”select a size” paper towels and then a shot of the thickness of the flannel.

As I mentioned above, we ordered 24 unpaper towels and they are the perfect amount for our family of four. They are great for wiping up spills, wash up great and are super soft for wiping sticky fingers and faces. To store clean ones, we roll them together and hang from our paper towel roll, well, now our unpaper towel roll. The flannel sheets naturally cling to each other which make them roll off perfectly when we pull them off the roll. I use the same unpaper towel through the day when I am drying my hands and then with supper (as I am home all day with earnest babe). We store dirty unpaper towels in an Urban Oreganics muslin bag in our broom closet. I wash a load of unpaper towels about every two days and use our regular natural detergent on a quick wash and tumble dry for about twenty five minutes (they dry quick!).  So far zero stains too!

Unpaper towels have been an easy transition for this earnest family and I am wishing everyday that I had not felt so intimidated and bought these bad boys sooner!
